I missed this, and have been substantially out of action, but have picked up your reminder!

 

Simon was keen to provide some time into this project as was Cecile and she had a friend who is interested, I met them recently.

 

below is a quote from Toby's notes of the last meeting:

"Simon Roberts said there could be interest in this field among private sector financial institutions in the locality, including e.g. Triodos, and Cecile Gillard mentioned the network of Beacon South West companies. Phil Parker, who said he’d been a convert from designing infrastructure for vehicle traffic to designing for inhabitants was keen to join this group. Tim Hodgkinson recommended Tom Hodgkinson’s Idler Academy in Notting Hill as an example of good work in the field. "

Back in 2004 with ambitions of a pilot in the Forest of Dean, I approached SWRDA with a plan for a social purpose business approach to investing in CDFIs such that social enterprise and micro business could be propagated. The background was in our having successfully sourced a microfinance initiative in Siberia and the creation of around 10,000 micro-businesses.

This wasn't aimed at Bristol in particular, rather as a vehicle to replicate on a franchising basis.  Aside from SWRDA, both ICOF and Triodos were approached without result.

I think I have contributed there Cecile, to describe what I refer to above which derives from the self-sustaining 'profit for purpose approach to social enterprise we operate.

 

I'd responded to you about Bristol 2050 on the CIC Association network

 

I recently dug up the letter I wrote to Baroness Thornton, when she was chair of the SEC, to describe our work

I should have popped this up to you before: We've been kicking off a project in Bristol City Council and have scheduled a discussion at the RSA Bristol network on Monday early evening that relates directly to this topic and to the network session we held last year on this topic.

“Building a Better Bristol aims to harness the quality and breadth of investment as well as the vision and drive of our innovators and entrepreneurs that are required for our common future”

Following on from our highly successful network sessions last year on connecting citizens with finance and our café-workshop on crowd funding,  Bristol RSA network invite you to feed into this development work which also flows directly from last years discussions, aimed at creating a high impact, long term, socialising investment opportunity.

Bristol City Council is looking at innovative and viable ways of working with the resources, effort and enthusiasm of citizens and businesses of Bristol to invest in our economic and social development for a sustainable future.

As usual this session will be participative and creative: We want the network where this thinking was first generated to contribute early in the process to shaping and defining its eventual potential, both locally and as a model that may be replicated elsewhere. 

This proposal is being developed by Bristol City Council and supported through NESTA’s (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) Creative Councils programme to explore how we help the citizens of Bristol have a real stake in the future of the city, thereby re-imagining the role of local government. 

The national RSA and other local and national finance and policy bodies are also taking an active role in the shaping of this project.

The BBB idea?

The creation of new mechanisms to develop investment finance with the local community: turning citizens, employees and institutions into genuine stakeholders, for the long run.

A small multidisciplinary team is drafting prototypes of potential investment products, and obtain an overview of delivery and governance models. The prototypes will cover a range of investment and delivery options eg:

• Low risk facilitation or direct provision of peer to peer investment
• Investment for significant changes in public and local services
• A stake in infrastructure that will benefit the residential and economic community over the long term (such as low carbon energy or broadband
