Should Bristol have an Elected Mayor?

Wednesday 22 February 2012, 6.30pm

Bristol City Council House, College Green, Bristol, BS1 5TR

Bristolians will be asked to vote for or against the idea of a directly elected Mayor in May 2012, in a local referendum proposed in the Government’s Localism Bill. Replacing the present Councillors plus Cabinet system in the City Council with a directly elected Mayor would represent the biggest upheaval to local democracy since the dissolution of Avon County Council.

This is a free-access public debate organised by members of the RSA Bristol Network with the participation of the Bristol Festival of Ideas, Bristol University’s Centre for Public Engagement and the Bristol branch of the Institute of Directors.

The debate will be chaired by broadcaster Chris Serle and an impartial review of the issues facing mayoral referendum will be presented by Professor Alex Marsh head of Bristol University’s School for Policy Studies, before the motion in favour of a directly elected Mayor for Bristol is debated by political and non-party speakers, with electronic votes taken before and after the debate and questions from the floor.

Comment by David Punter on April 27, 2011 at 18:25: I also turned up at Bush House, as advised, and found nobody there; and the chap in charge informed me that no booking had been made. I am getting quite anxious about this; we don't seem to have any financial procedure in order, and this only feeds the idea that most of us are not advised about what's going on. Can I have my two-quid parking fee back, please?

But worryingly, I seem to be completely out of the loop on meeting dates. Where and when are these being sent - or posted - given that it doesn't seem to be via this group? (or only via Toby's comment a few minutes ago) Am I missing some link to somewhere?

Lots of inspiring ideas sparked off - partly because the meeting is opened up to RSA and non-RSA alike I think. And a new Cafe Society proposed by John Pontin based on Buzzbnk initiatives which will be exciting.

New technologies and digital inclusion at our next meeting - looking forward to meeting up on the planning for this the week after next.

Comment by Katie Moore on April 14, 2011 at 14:47: Last night's Bristol Network event was the best we've seen. With guest speakers, Michael Norton of Buzzbnk, Bevis Watts from Triodos and Max Comfort from Stroud Commonwealth, we had an audience of 70 Fellows and guests. The evening was a huge success, culminating in 13 attendees talking for 2 minutes about projects they would like us to support.

The projects varied and included arts, manufacuturing and commerce, so really set the scene for us to positively move forward.

I suggest that we could use Cafe Society to take some of these projects forward and I'll be inviting everyone to put their project here on the Bristol Network Ning.
