Vivs - thanks for the agenda for the 5th, with early items on brainstorming and scoping.
Following up discussion with Jemima in earlier comments below, I have pulled together - with help from Bob Porrer - a "How can I ..." menu of areas where Fellows might want help, and social media could assist. I've added some ideas on what improvements might be necessary.
Hope it may be useful. It's a Google doc publicly available here

@David - thanks! Just sent you an email :)

@jemima - yes, glad to help. Can you join up with the other council member leads/interests on this ...particularly Bob and Paul? Maybe we could then prioritise some Fellow needs and enthusiasms that could be supported online. We could also do something on the lines of - "we believe this is what's needed - any more ideas/requests". Start with the customers, not the tech.

@William: absolutely!

@David: thanks for joining the dots between this thread and the Charter Group discussion. I think it makes great sense to start with an overview of what Fellows want - can you help me with pulling the different "what can Fellows do" threads together in time for the May 5 meeting?

let's not confuse ends and means here. My own experience is that if you follow up F2F with digital it's a lot more effective and sustainable. trying to use digital as a bypass or alternative ends up drifting to oblivion. I can theorise why but probably not helpful. let's make sure on 5/5 we have something we want to engage with afterwards. I analysed a recent twitterfeed on a conference. Only 10% was ( in my opinion) content. around 60% was hygiene stuff. 25 % RT and 5% SPAM. A few thoughtful comments are worth a multitude of mindless interactions

I am interested in how online communication integrates with and supports face-to-face communication and vice versa. Online collaboration is often very broad in its approach and things get done when there is real focus and by working in small groups. It is easy to get one's voice heard amongst a group who share a common interest (as I am doing right now). How do we turn interest into projects and activity.

Hi Chris - great to have your expertise and ideas here! I too believe rethinking public services, and also neighbourhood "empowerment" (choose your favourite buzz word) will be big issues in coming months, relevant to RSA. Some thoughts on services here Digital Public Services. Tomorrow the Tories will launch their Big Society ideas in earnest ... foretaste here.
I think digital engagement will get real when we have something to focus on.

@Chris: Oooh, the RSA as a benchmark for online engagement. Might have links with the ongoing charter discussions - and a possible line of enquiry at the various roadshow-type events in train.
@David: That dashboard is marvellous. I've added netvibes to my exploration list. It's the kind of digital tool that many organisation/movements could benefit from.
@Tessy: Looking forward to hearing about meetings, virtual or otherwise. We're experimenting with Skype conference calls in Glory of Failure as well as chat sessions. You certainly get different kinds of thinking out of them.

Thanks all for the comments so far, keep them coming, particularly on areas for the group to focus on, our objectives and our aims. This is a broad and heavy populated area so we need to focus, focus, focus.

I need to update this but here is a snapshot presentation on where we are with Social Media surgeries, (the RSA Digital Engagement programme).

We are going to be incorporating a new type of model, social reporting working with David Wilcox, and some of the locations may change/alter but gives you a flavour of where we are so far.... but where do we go next.

Further details on our first meeting to follow and please invite people to this Group, we need their input.

My opening gambit is that we should avoid a declared top down strategy with targets and look at how we create a forum which allows the fellowship to build communities of interest that can engage with topics of interest to the fellowship.
I have in mind a virtual Hyde park soap box where anyone can bring along an issue and expect a hearing. My experience is that rules of engagement and codes of conduct would help and that we let the topics emerge from the power of the fellowship.
That sort of approach gives value to membership and a platform for people to find like minded individuals.
The measure of success would then be the number of groups spun off and the sum of impact downstream. It sounds a bit like Quakers online to me...
I'd like to see an RSA rule for online engagement that people quote like the Chatham house rule which is widely respected and very useful to a wider set of society.
Let me illustrate. I'd like to test the fellowship for interest on the mutualisation/cooperative model of public services. I'd like to know if there are 5 50 or 500 people who actually want to develop this as a theme and whether the RSA is the right platform to do something useful on this beyond an individual lecture or short series. My suspicion is that it is, but without the digital engagement approach the chances of surfacing the right group is pretty hard

Review of RSA Fellowship nings, social networks

Over the next few months the RSAde Group will be consolidating regional social networks and nings. The aim will be to improve connectivity for Fellows, improve communication and reduce fragmentation.

Therefore there will be an increase of regional and thematic groups over the next few months.

If you would like further information on these changes please contact the RSAde team via the Digital Engagement group on this network.

Does Population Matter?

One of the world’s leading geographers Professor Danny Dorling visits the RSA to argue that our concerns over population growth may be overblown.

The Power of Vulnerability

Influential author and speaker Dr Brené Brown tackles the myth that vulnerability is a weakness. Instead, she argues, it is the clearest path to courage and meaningful connection, and has the power to transform the way we engage and educate.

NHS at 65: rejuvenate or retire?

The NHS turns 65 this year at a time of significant change and unprecedented financial challenge. The RSA and the Nuffield Trust bring together panel of influential thinkers from the health sector and beyond to debate whether it is time for the NHS to be retired off or whether there is scope for reinvention.
