The #RSAde Group's priority objective is to ensure that FRSA communications (including networking and collaboration) are maximised through digital and social media. As part of its remit, the group tests and develops tools, techniques and incentives to enable Fellows and Staff to engage effectively online. A Fellowship Council Working Group but all Fellows are welcome to join and contribute to this Network.

Hi Kathy - I really like Reason, Skills, Action as the condition for engagement, online or otherwise. You (and others) might be interested in the Linkedin discussion Why did you join the RSA? What kind of RSA would you like to see? http://linkd.in/N8aaEZ
The challenge for RSA Fellowship as I see it is that people have many different reasons, levels of skills, and there are limited routes to action.
That has kept people talking since we first got an online platform over fours years ago. During that time the tendency has been to reach for another tech solution. Current plans are the fourth try.
My point? It is now pretty clear that the issue is not digital engagement, or even engagement. I think is how to get some shared sense of purpose.
I'll follow up further on your blog post http://rsafellowship.com/profiles/blogs/rsa-elections-at-large-cand...
Thanks again for getting to the heart of things here.

In the link posted below the altruistic value described is that of protecting the lives of the vulnerable, who have been deemed imperfect , disposable.
Comment by Kathy seddon on July 4, 2012 at 18:50 I totally agree Paul. Perceived value is a bedrock driver - and in simplifying (and trying to sneak value in as a 'reason') I haven't done it justice. Very helpful thank you
Comment by Andy Williamson on July 4, 2012 at 18:31 Hi Kathy, thanks for that... it's a good summary. I know you've simplified the model here but I would add 'value' into it as a major factor... my motivation to do something (including learning a new skill) is always going to be driven by some intrinsic value I perceive I'm getting out of it (even if that value is atruistic). Perhaps it's reason that lights the fire, but perceived value keeps it burning!
Comment by Jeff Mowatt on July 4, 2012 at 18:27 Though I posted this in the Social Entrepreneurs group, it also has relevance to Digital Engagement.
There seem to be two interpretations of the term 'Social Business' one being about using social media to sell more 'product' in the conventional profit maximising way, the other is what many see as an alternative, the kind of business which focusses on those who fall between the cracks, those that this form of social business will not serve
Comment by Kathy seddon on July 4, 2012 at 18:19 This is an excellent discussion and i was going to 'blurt out' all the things I believe about online engagement. Having written it out I thought it was a bit long so i have added it to the blogs. I won't put the link here as the blog also contains candidate material that doesn't really belong in this discussion.
To just take the tail end of my blog post I believe that one possible leverage "thing" - to generate wider engagement - might be to work with motivation theory. I was part of an eLearning specialist team and we found clear evidence that to engage online participants they needed:
* A good Reason to engage (intrinsic such as belonging or curiosity; extrinsic such as rewards)
* The Skills necessary to take part (including self belief as well as technical)
* Action would take place; and if reasons and skills were very good it might lead to a ‘flow’ of sustained activity.
Apologies for the 'forced' acronym and simplistic motivation summary - but if expanded (happy to add detail) and adapted (please suggest how) it might perhaps offer a model for online engagement that could be part of a digital engagement / communications strategy?
A final thought we also tried to assess 'learning in dialogues' (as part of an evaluation strategy and to try to understand how to facilitate it).
Hi Paul, Andy - I think RSA will continue to have problems with centrally designed systems unless they tie together clearer strategies for Fellowship, content, engagement ... and then tech. Meanwhile we could come at this from two directions.
1. A campaign/topic, if there is one. Something before FC elections in 2 years.
2. How to build your own network within RSA. Develop some semi-fictional personas reflecting different interests and situations. Paul - sounds as if you could make a start:-)
Comment by Andy Williamson on July 4, 2012 at 8:54 Hi Paul, there's more about online campaign strategy in this book I edited about the 2010 general election (free to download!)... http://www.andywilliamson.com/?p=128 :-)
Comment by Paul Nash on July 4, 2012 at 8:49 Many thanks for this Fred - and I will check out the reference. In this instance I was trying to make a point however that there are lessons to be learned out there and wondered if there are any for us. I understand the point that David is making about specific, narrower contexts but I also share his frustration at not being able to leverage aspecific "thing" that will help us generate wider engagement.
For people like me who live in the wild west and only get to London now and then the on line engagement is a key part of the fellowship network but it's not a lot of use if I'm only engaging with myself and a few others with whom I will engage through other channels anyway a lot of the time.
I'm very interested by the input frm Andy Williamson and the notion of perpetual campaigns and building a gradual following. Once again, many thanks for the reference, much appreciated.
Comment by fred garnett on July 4, 2012 at 8:14 @Paul, why does Twitter work. In his unpublished theory on the Tetrad of media change Marshall McLuhan posited that new media get adopted to the degree that they follow conversational models, hence SMS, IRC, Twitter, etc. His doctoral student PAul Levinson eventually published the ideas in Digital McLuhan. Tetrad info here
Over the next few months the RSAde Group will be consolidating regional social networks and nings. The aim will be to improve connectivity for Fellows, improve communication and reduce fragmentation.
Therefore there will be an increase of regional and thematic groups over the next few months.
If you would like further information on these changes please contact the RSAde team via the Digital Engagement group on this network.
