Is a new approach required?
The banking crisis was caused by lending to people who couldn’t repay. The lenders knew the borrowers couldn’t repay and therefore the crisis was predictable. So why did they do it?
Corporate governance, corporate reporting, risk management, risk registers, risk models, regulations, standards, codes of practice, as enforced by external and internal auditors, audit and remuneration committees, boards, regulators and governments failed to prevent
- the credit crunch, the Madoff and Stanford frauds,
- the obvious risk of bankers lending to people who can’t afford to repay, and
- the collapse of AIG, Alliance & Leicester, Barings, Bear Sterns, Bradford & Bingley, Dexia, Fannie Mae, Fortis, Freddie Mac, Goldman Sachs, HBOS, Lehman Brothers, Lloyds TSB, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Northern Rock, Royal Bank of Scotland, Société Générale, UBS and Washington Mutual.

I was curious to see what was being discussed by this group. But it looks like it has gone into 'pause mode' for the time being! Has it, perhaps, been overtaken by the deliberations of the 'GAG' [unfortunate acronym!] - and the decisions now made by the Trustee [trusty?] Board a few weeks ago?
At any rate, it will be interesting, in particular, to see what the 'more integrated and flexible approach to Regional/National structures' to which Luke Johnson referred in his 13 July e-mail looks like. This is the aspect of the GAG recommendations that some of us in the RSA Ireland Committee wer most critical of. To quote our submission, 'we find it disappointing that the Advisory Group has not come forward with thought-leading ideas for more innovative practice – ideas which Fellows across the Society could then be invited to discuss with a view to their adoption and/or adaptation to suit regional circumstances.'
