Hi Group,

I wanted to draw your attention to the work of 2020 Education.  They are looking for innovative and creative projects run by young people and teachers that are aiming to improve society.  They want support and projects to showcase.  Check out the link if your interested. http://www.rsablogs.org.uk/2013/fellowship/2020-education-post/

Thanks

Hi everyone. I work at Teach First and some colleagues of mine are piloting two events in Manchester and London to engage young people with the wide variety of careers that exist in education. One of the challenges they have identified is that  young people tend to assume you can be a teacher and that's about it! They are looking for volunteers to come along and network with year 12 and 13 students on the afternoons of 25 March (London) and 27 March (Manchester) - if you or any colleagues are interested please feel free to connect with me or alternatively just register your interest here. The afternoons will include a few sessions - including employability, networking and a panel. Some examples of people they are keen to volunteer are: teachers (all routes), educational psychologists, education publishers, educational games developers, university sabbatical officers, HE/FE staff, education entrepreneurs, student union staff, youth workers, education consultants. I'd really encourage people to get involved. Thanks!

This is all very interesting Matthew. I suspect the struggles never stop. I'm 20 years older than you and I'm still struggling.. No date for our conference yet but will keep you posted. You can join our mail list from our Lifewide Education community website

It would be fabulous if you could encourage her to come over to the UK.

Let me know what happens. (When is your conference?).

Marcia's recent book 'Authoring Your Life' is broadly-speaking about the struggles of (20- and ?) 30-somethings to enter into and broaden their 'Self-authored' way of knowing (Kegan's Level 4).

As I'm in my 40s, it's the struggles of shifting into Kegan's 'Self-transforming' (Kegan's Level 5) that is of more interest to me.

I don't know whether Marcia will write a book about this - it might depend on whether the cohort she's following start's struggling with Self-transforming.

There were a few glimmers of it in the current book, but not a great deal.

I asked Marcia about this in my most recent e-mail. But I asked about a ton of things, I think, so she might need to a month or two to build up the strength to consider responding... ;-)

Hi Matthew

Marcia's article is new but I'm sure she will have drawn on the content of her existing books. I wasn't aware of her new book. You might be interested to know that we are in negotiation about her coming over to the UK later this year to be the keynote speaker at our Lifewide Education conference.

best wishes

Hi Norman,

Is the Marcia Baxter Magolda article an extract from her recent book of that name, or a new article?

I'd love to see it if it's something new.
I received a really interesting e-mail from Marcia only last week...

Cheers,

Matthew

A central idea underlying lifewide learning and development is that we use all the different spaces and opportunities that life has to offer to be the person we want or need to be. The latest issue of Lifewide Magazine examines the idea and offers a range of perspectives and personal accounts including a feature by Marcia Baxter Magolda on 'authoring your life'. How does formal education facilitate this process of becoming the person a person wants to be?

I hope people don't mind me posting here, but I'd really appreciate it if you could do this online experiment (being run through University College, London - UCL) and share it widely.

It's not spam (honest) - just look at the accuracy of my spelling and absence of pharmaceutical offers! Here it is:

Clinician or otherwise, this simple reasoning study will help shape the future of medicine by helping us to understand how people operate in resource constrained situations.

The experiment will take less than 10 minutes and your responses will be anonymous.

I'd be really grateful if you can offer your support in doing the experiment and in sharing it with your contacts so I can get appropriate numbers for analysis.

If you are keen to hear the outcome, I can send you a copy of the study on request.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Hello everyone

As you are in the education group, I thought this online consultation from Pearson might be something which interested you. Please see below for more information:

Pearson has been involved in education for over one hundred years. We believe in different types of learning for different types of people, and we want our exams to help raise the standard of education that every single child receives. This online pamphlet contains some suggestions from Pearson, Edexcel’s parent company, about how improvements can be achieved.

These are some initial proposals to meet the challenges our examination system faces. We believe they can help form an important part of a package to ensure our examinations are fit for purpose. But we certainly don’t have all the answers.

The questions and ideas included in the consultation are intended to start a conversation on how that change might look. We believe the options we are putting forward are worthy of rigorous debate and consideration, but they are by no means exhaustive. We hope that other suggestions and ideas will surface through consultation. We will listen to these views and prepare for change.

We’re asking – and have started to try to answer – questions across six areas:

1. How best to set world leading standards?
2. How best to define and protect a new gold standard?
3. Should assessment be a profession?
4. How best to share and use data to drive system wide improvement?
5. How best to create a curriculum with a balance of stretch and mastery?
6. How best to measure with more meaning?

Whether you’re a teacher, a parent, a student or anyone who cares about the UK having the best educational standards in the world, we’re interested in what you have to say. We would like to invite you to take part in our consultation, so please visit www.leadingonstandards.com to share your views.

Also, we want to make this consultation as inclusive as possible, so please feel free to share a link or information on this consultation via your online channels including your website, forums or e-newsletter. We would also encourage you to use the social media sharing buttons on each section of the website to tweet or share a link via Twitter or Facebook with your contacts.

Big questions are being asked about our education system. Join the debate about how the UK can lead the world on standards.
