RSA Fellowship Social Network

Social Network for RSA Fellows

The story so far…

The RSA has invested a lot over the last 3 years to develop Fellowship networks and engagement. In light of these changes, and following on from our founding principles and requests from Fellows for a sense of clarity and purpose we want to:

  • Re-affirm a common understanding of our values and aims
  • Recognise we will only achieve our goals if we work together
  • Realise the massive potential for real change
So we need something that can:
  • Draw out the characteristics of the RSA and the nature of Fellowship
  • Explain in a clear and exciting way what the RSA does; the opportunities and possibilities available to Fellows; and why someone would want to join
  • Encourage and enable the types of behaviours required to achieve our aims
Following feedback on our first attempt, we are now working, together with the Fellowship Council, to talk to Fellows across the UK and internationally, in order to produce such documents.

This meeting was the first in a series of opportunities over the coming months for Fellows to help shape this.

A short summary is below, and a longer detailed version attached for those who wish to read it.

Summary of discussions

1. How do you feel about the concept of a 'Charter' and a 'how to guide' as opposed to other types of document

Broad agreement that a Charter and a guide feel like the right type of documents to produce. Short, punchy, confident and
positive Charter; longer Fellow-focused guide to participation.

The aim should be to move the organisation to a participatory model.

It should nod to our history, but be forward facing.

It is unlikely to be confused with the Royal Charter (but should reference it).

We should build in an evaluation of whether we are achieving this.

2. Your thoughts on a broad overview of the content and what is most useful for you to know

Broad agreement that the sections outlined in the current version are right.

Some of the detail of the text needs to change to get the right tone / balance.

Emphasise interdisciplinary nature more.

Capture the energy and inspirational nature of Fellows and Fellowship.

Acknowledge and celebrate the personal gains available from being a Fellow.

Need clear confident text.
