RSA Fellowship Social Network

Social Network for RSA Fellows

Dear fellow Fellows,

Inspired by the Design for Change global schools project, we are inviting a group of 25 young people aged 18 to 25 to look at ways that they can lead change in their local communities. Our working title is Design for Change Leaders

Working with Cisco, Nov8 and my own organisation Institute of Human Development we are hosting an initial gathering on 2nd September.

Our intent is to invite a group of young people to create something of their own where they decide the issues, they design solutions and they get out into their communities to "be the change" without interference.

Young people from all educational and social backgrounds are welcome - indeed vital! If you know anyone who might be interested in this there is a simple web site and Facebook group at http://dfc-leaders.squarespace.com - and registrations are first come, first served.

I know many RSA Fellows mentor young people - from all social environments - maybe this is an opportunity for them to engage in something liberating and inspirational.

Do let me know what you think - this is a bold and new experiment in the good traditions of RSA.

This looks really interesting Adrian!

I work with a network of young people called Edge Learner Forum.
The learner forum is all about creating empowerment & influence and devising and delivering learner led projects which aim to help more young people get more out of education. I'd like to encourage some of our most active members to migrate onto other suitable projects and the Design for Change Leaders seems like a great thing!

How will the young people be supported to participate?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your interest - and it sounds as if you and I should compare notes.

We are taking this one step at a time.

Step one is to establish the extend of the interest by young people and then establish the relevance of the Design for Change approach and process. For more on this, you can look at the Schools project at http://www.designforchangeuk.org

The next step will be to encourage the young people to not only use the Design for Change process to develop their own change projects, but to consider taking over the leadership of the initiative.

In both cases - running change projects, and perhaps running DFC itself - the founding groups will be supported by the core sponsors - myself from IHD, Mike Morris from Cisco, and John Hemingway from Nov8. John and I are professional coaches and mentors, and Mike is an experienced mentor for young people including young offenders.

We have other organisations willing to get actively involved - on the basis that there is sufficient interest from the young people themselves. We are working with the design Council and Warwick University and others - all of whom have resources to offer the project.

There is no disguising the fact that this initial gathering (2nd Sept) is an experiment. The participants will be shaping the future of the initiative ... or not!

Adrian
