Hi Ian, great to hear you're interested. just to clarify - the event that was due to be held on the 1st June is now on the 29th instead. So just need to book yourself a place on the 29th if you want to come along.
Thanks!

I look forward to being with you all on the 1st and the 29th. It may be of interest that some work by Business in Education gave strong support for the affective as well as the effective needs of employers - what people do do as well as what they know, can do and have done. I found this interesting reading and have put it into many talks, including a recent lecture tour on developing entrepreneurship at universities in Warsawa, Bucharesti and Sofia. The clue is Schultz' Human Capital [ancient but gold] and Adam Smith who had this covered well. I will put the slides up on slideshare.com for those who want them.

Hi all - a quick update on the event I mentioned below...please note the change of date, and the clarifiction of remit.

The event is in partnership with the Young Achievers Trust and is going ahead on 29 June 18.30-20.30, with a focus on how young people can make themselves more employable - please do sign up for a place if you would like to attend, and fell free to promote it to others who might like to come along: http://youthemployability.eventbrite.com/

As this was a piece of work that was already in progress, I had a chat to Rosie about how to best support the work of this group, without things getting too complicated. So we agreed that it will be a chance for people to find out more about the Young Achievers and the RSA (including the work of this group). It will not replace the bigger event you guys had planned for the Autumn on the theme of employability, but we will use the opportunity to tell people about the work of the group, and lead up to your event.

Hope that makes sense - any questions do shout. Thanks.

Hey Ben, interesting thought. There must be massive networks of students and graduates we could tap into...

Also just wanted to update the group on an event we've got planned to support this group, get people face to face and hopefully spark some actions. It's going to be at the RSA House, on Tues 1 June from 6.00 (or 6.30 tbc). We're working with the Young Achievers Trust to arrange a panel of speakers around the theme of employability, followed by networking time. Details are still being sketched out, so if you've any ideas or comments please do shout - it would be good to make the most of having such a great bunch of people in the same room. Rosie, sorry we haven't spoken about this directly yet, Chris is acting as go-between!
And of course, everyone in this group is welcome to attend. We're hoping invites will be ready next week, so I'll make sure you all get an email about it - but suggestions and input all welcome. Do leave a comment here!

Hey - slightly new to the whole debate but a quick thought on how to encourage younger people to join the Fellowship.

The first thing that comes to mind is that there has to be a whole load of university students and graduates who are interested in the subjects and issues we cover at the RSA and who have some good value to add. We could perhaps start looking at talking to universities about setting up student groups on campus (like any other charity) or even helping them to screen their own RSA lectures. A kind of intra-campus RSA Fellowship perhaps.

@Rosie I think an Employability focus event is extremely relevant and engaging for YP -I have been heavily involved in this arena but looking at Education, Employment & Entrepreneurship so that when we're tackling employability we're also addressing self-employment as a viable option for Young People. I would be very happy to input directly into this if it'd be helpful; you can email me: rajeeb@enternships.com or call me to discuss if it'd be quicker!

Hi,

Apologies for the seeming silence on this - it is moving forward albeit slowly. Chris, Zena and I had a short but productive meeting yesterday. Our idea is to develop an RSA Youth Focus group with the aim of achieving the following over the next year:

Develop a regular programme of Youth Focus events on the RSA calendar which raise topical issues and involve young people in debate, possibly starting off with Employability themed.
Follow on from these with a series of smaller round table ‘thought leaders’ events that pick up on this theme in a bit more detail and suggest practical or policy implications of discussions
Look at how to make youth fellowships accessible, perhaps by inviting fellows to contribute £10 extra per year to a bursary scheme, for example, and to engage them as mentors for younger fellows

I know these are reasonably specific but we felt it was important to start with something tangible that fits within the RSA's current scope. In terms of moving them forward, we hope that the energy and ideas of interested fellows will help carry it forward.

Any thoughts?

@MAS - yep, take the point. Sorry, if my response was more frustrating than useful! I'm on the periphery of this one, so don't have any more details at the moment. I just know about the proposed event from the YAT side of things - it's certainly not the be all and end all - you are right that the intention is for involvement and action, that's just the bit I happen to know about :)

@MAS hey there, I know that Rosie, Chris and Zena had a quick chat last week to get things moving again. I'm sure they'll update on here. And we've been talking about pulling together an event, linked with the YAT, in early June. Fellows and non-Fellows interested in the issues, panel of speakers, young people, YAT people etc. Any thoughts?
Comment by Laura Billings on April 12, 2010 at 8:59
@rajeeb thanks for the comment. yep, the YAT came from the Whitbread one, it was set up as an independent charity when Whitbread changed their CSR policy, so they funded it for one year to help get it on it's feet. That was 3 years ago now.
And useful to hear about the barriers to joining in and making full use of the opportunity. A lot of Fellows say the same thing, whatever age they are, so it's certainly something this group could work on.
