RSA London Region is doing an interesting and very successful youth project that is growing year on year, income generating and highly effective in terms of its own aims - it might not be THE thing to do, but I certainly think it has model properties. Anthony Earl, a London Fellow leads that work with a team of other people from the LR committee.

And of course there is all the important stuff that I am involved in my work with the RSA, which you can read about elsewhere on Ning.

Hi guys, good start to the conversation Rosie. In answer to Q1 below, I just wanted to chip in and let you know about one way in which the RSA is trying to both support those working with young people, and help young people access the opportunities of being a Fellow. The Young Achievers Trust rewards and supports young volunteers (16-24) and we offer a free year of Fellowship to the winners and runners-up after the awards on Feb 5th. This is only the 2nd year we've done this, and it's a steep learning curve trying to work out how the young people can benefit, how Fellows can get involved, and how we deal with what is currently a rather inaccessible organisation for young people. Not to mention the legal issues for the under 18's in the group. I was formally a trustee of the YAT and now I'm too old for that, I'm an advisor. I'd love for this group to be able to learn from, and help improve the work the RSA does with the YAT as a way to test ideas in this area.

@Mike I am sure that Rosie will respond more in full, but these working groups are exploring areas that the Fellowship Council think are important. All the groups are working in partnership with RSA - a member of staff designated to exploring the area with Fellows, so the ideas will evolve with them. The RSA has already been looking at topics around youth, but my feeling is that this process is enriched by embedding the development of this thinking in the Fellowship.

@Rosie Great start to the conversation. I really like your idea of the two strands. It would also be interesting to delve into any history of initiatives bringing more young people into focus at the RSA.

@ Maureen I really like your idea! I wonder how we would start.... any thoughts?

This is the starting point for the Youth working group of the Fellowship Council.

I think there are two different but related areas of work here. These are:

a. The role of the fellowship council in inspiring and connecting fellows working on youth focused projects. This will link in directly with the fellowship charter and the ideas fund and may require an interpretation of these in terms of priorities for young people's programmes.

b. Opportunities for young leaders to become fellows themselves and access the activities of the RSA.

I suggest we start with the following questions:
1. what youth focused activity is currently run by the RSA and across the fellowship?
2. what is the RSA's (future?) strategy with regard to youth accessibility and projects?
3. how do we move forward the two areas of work above?

I would imagine a first meeting would enable us to thrash this out and set out some clear objectives for taking it forward. It would also be helpful to get guidance and discussion from staff on the parameters for this work.

How about an early evening meeting some time in Feb for those interested and then we can set out a way forward? I am also sitting on the charter and ideas fund groups so can make sure this is mainstreamed into those pieces of work.

Zina and Tessa - how does this sound?
Anyone else welcome to input as well of course.

Thanks.
Rosie
