Welcome to the group!

The RSA was pioneering in allowing women into the Fellowship from our founding in 1754. "Ladies as well as gentlemen are invited into this subscription, as there is no reason to imagine they will be behind-hand in a generous and sincere regard for the good of their country" William Shipley, Founder of the RSA, Dec 1753

But since then the numbers of women in the Fellowship have dropped to around 22% and gender inequality is still a pressing social issue.

The Focus on: Women initiative is only the beginning. It is intended to connect female Fellows to create an active and supportive network; raise awareness of the RSA among women to address the current unrepresentative gender ratio in the Fellowship; and support Fellows and others wanting to tackle some of the issues particular to women in the 21st century.

Why should I join?
We hope that being part of this group means that you can
* build on connections and make new contacts
* nominate projects you would like help from other Fellows to develop
* take a pro-active role in activities
* develop a coordinated approach to working with other established groups or networks
* share ideas and insights on issues of interest
* find out more about this initiative and the other Fellowship Council working groups
* provide suggestions on how to improve the Focus on: Women initiative

Where do I start?

Interesting story on MT - http://www.managementtoday.co.uk/channel/Leadership/news/988810/gov...

Not sure forcing companies is right way forward ---- and clearly being exploited for election purposes (if story true).

A friend just sent me the link to this online exhibition by Imperial College called 100Women100Visions, which is a series of 100 portraits, celebrating women scientists and engineers from all academic levels at Imperial College London, in support of International Women’s Day.

Hi Karen, thanks for getting in touch. I have been talking to Pam Morris about the previous initiative, so it's great to see you back and keen to get involved again!
Would be great to see you at the launch event here at the RSA on 30 March with a friend, you can sign up here: http://rsafocusonwomen.eventbrite.com/
Initially the best way to get involved is to do what you have just done: introduce yourself and express an interest. After the launch event, we'll have a better idea of what issues are raised, and how we can develop solutions together. I know Olivia is currently working on the following events and will be able to update us soon on what happens next...

I am delighted to see this initiative since 400 of us women fellows had the same idea several years ago and formed Womens Voices, which developed into Fellows Voices which led to things like the fellowship council, so well done for continuing to address the imbalance. I am keen to develop the RSA into a place where women feel comfortable and can make use of their talents and contributions, so how can I help?

Addressing the Gender Imbalance: What is the contribution of women and women Fellows to the aims of the RSA? How do we achieve this? Calling all those with an interest to get involved!

…. Our group is planning to trial a 6 month awareness raising campaign to engage more women with the RSA and its Fellowship. Depending on the success of this initiative, it could then be rolled out nationally and internationally as a model for increasing diversity amongst our Fellows.

The proportion of women fellows has been rising in recent years and our role is to consider practical ways of supporting this increase in the most effective ways possible. Be it through partnerships, events, communication and so on, we have put our heads together to come up with a few ideas.

Following an initial meeting before the last Council Meeting in November, the five of us [Olivia, Katryn and Laura from the RSA and Jemima and me from FC] have had 2 more meetings and many discussions and emails.

We decided to trial the campaign in Bristol and Milton Keynes because I am based in Bristol and Milton Keynes doesn’t currently have an RSA network.

We developed a plan that includes increasing the proportion of female Fellows through current members introducing other women - “Fellow get Fellow”; a launch event at RSA House on 30th March; regular reports from, and about, women to be highlighted in the Fellowship Newsletter; possible webinars; a proposed article in the Journal; and four live events in Bristol and Milton Keynes with time for networking, and the chance to tackle locally relevant issues. We also have commitment from the RSA’s Research and Recruitment team to spend 2 months on personalised invites.

One of our aims is to involve organisations in these geographical areas that benefit women and work with them, as possible partners to heighten awareness about the events and the RSA Fellowship. We also aim to engage Fellows who would like to be involved in promoting and organising these events and want to address issues of particular relevance to gender.

The initiative is to be launched on International Women’s Day, 8th March in the Fellowship Newsletter; in addition, Ada Lovelace Day on 24th March [Ada wrote the first computer programme] provides an opportunity for us to blog about women Fellows who work in science or technology; with our first event taking place at RSA House on Tuesday, 30th March “Focus on: Women”.

If you have an idea, contribution or an event you would like to include in this initiative, let us know.

Very interesting statistics! Looks like our new Working Group set up to re-address the unequality represented in the fellowship, have our work cut out for us. Look out for our news about how we intend to tackle the imbalance, hopefully by launching a campaign on March 8th - International Women's Day.

Hey all, I've got some stats and info on the gender balance, I'll get them up on here early next week.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for joining this group: we're keen to get men involved in any recruitment drive!

As far as I know/ can remember, I think women make up about 23 % of Fellows (but I'm sure someone can confirm/ correct that). The main reason is historical - until recently, women simply didn't consider themselves the type of people who should be Fellows (might be something in the name...) and/ or weren't invited.

As far as I know, women have always been able to join the RSA (but again, I'm sure someone can correct me on that if I'm wrong).

Maybe we could start by addressing the gender imbalance in this group?

Do we have any more detail why the Fellowship is like this?
Comment by Gill Kelley on January 26, 2010 at 22:34
A group with no discussions! Have we any statistics - just how big is this imbalance?
