Manufactures

Where have you gone, 'manufactures'? I know there are changes in the way the RSA positions itself through the new vision, but I really was interested when I joined in the manufactures side of the full title of the RSA. Anyone feel the same?

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Manufactures...

I'm sure there will be some people who think it's not part of the RSA's future, maybe even society's future, but I really looked forward to finding out more about this far-away world - nursing and education it is not. There must be so much to learn from it and from the different types of Fellow I think that we miss out on that could contribute from there, but I see so little activity going on. Or maybe it's my perception that it's only a small proportion of the Fellowship are engaged there. In which case, how do I meet them?

This group might not take off, and if so, maybe that reflects how people feel about manufactures more generally. But if there are:

a) people interested
b) people who see it as important
c) people engaged in it

I'd be really interested in your thoughts here.

We'll be discussing it under The Glory of Failure's Organisation Theme too, so please join that group too.

Would it not be easier to use Google Docs to invite comments? I doubt Google will go away very soon :-)

Yes I investigated and found that too! An unforeseen development with Huddle pulling out, that must have happened over the Christmas break. I'll try to send it round via email

Hi Julian,

I just tried accessing Huddle Workspaces, got a message about the service being retired in March, clicked through to Huddle and then got the error pasted below. Logging out/in of rsafellowship.com made no difference, and I assume that signing up for a native Huddle account would be no use as then it is no longer being accessed via Ning and wouldn't "know who I am".

Regards,

Andrew

Hi all and happy new year

There's been no new traffic on the site since my last post. Does that mean none of you could access the discussion doc in the Huddle workspace I mentioned?

If there's a problem I could find a way to email it to all of you.

PS I should add that for now, please share your comments on the Huddle document in this Comment space, so that other Fellows on the Ning site can see what we're up to, and hopefully get attracted into joining us!

Right on cue, see the announcement that's just been made to launch a new Government Foresight programme on the future of manufacturing. This is what is referred to in the document I have uploaded to the Huddle Workspace and which they have invited us to contribute to.

Hi everyone

I'm really interested in this group and really pleased to see it being lively! We are tiny tiny manufacturer in Southampton and I'm aware that we are probably 'reinventing the wheel' a bit so I'd be really keen, where I can, to learn from others. I'm not able to get to London for early morning meetings but can do later in the day - hope there's something soon that I can attend.

Great post Andrew, and great to have you in this group. I remember Solderpad very well from the Catalyst panel discussion about it.

I have now posted up a discussion document that summarises what I think the current state of play on RSA manufacturing is, and my suggestions for how we could take it forward.

I've created a dedicated Huddle Workspace for manufacturing, but I'm new to this so bear with me while I try to invite you all into the space. I think I have to "friend" all of you in Ning to do so, so expect some pings from me and please accept!

If you're not sure where/what I mean by Huddle scroll up to the top of this Ning Screen and you'll see an option to click on "Huddle Workspaces"

All,

I'm new to this platform, and realised that a more appropriate place to post would be a new topic in the forum and so I've moved my previous post there. Also clarified that my disappointment with decline of interest in manufacturing was targeted at the UK and possibly the West, rather than the RSA (I couldn't comment on the latter!)

Regards,

Andrew

I'll post up a note that I've produced trying to map out all the manufacturing-related initiatives I know about. But the answer does obviously depend on how you define manufacturing.
