Manufactures

Where have you gone, 'manufactures'? I know there are changes in the way the RSA positions itself through the new vision, but I really was interested when I joined in the manufactures side of the full title of the RSA. Anyone feel the same?

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Manufactures...

I'm sure there will be some people who think it's not part of the RSA's future, maybe even society's future, but I really looked forward to finding out more about this far-away world - nursing and education it is not. There must be so much to learn from it and from the different types of Fellow I think that we miss out on that could contribute from there, but I see so little activity going on. Or maybe it's my perception that it's only a small proportion of the Fellowship are engaged there. In which case, how do I meet them?

This group might not take off, and if so, maybe that reflects how people feel about manufactures more generally. But if there are:

a) people interested
b) people who see it as important
c) people engaged in it

I'd be really interested in your thoughts here.

We'll be discussing it under The Glory of Failure's Organisation Theme too, so please join that group too.

Matthew, that's a very interesting angle, and it relates to another discussion I've been having with a craft and heritage organisation recently, as well as work the design team here have been doing on increasing people's resourcefulness and ingenuity with respect to everyday materials. I'd be keen to explore it further with you when we meet up.

Everyone - please keep posting up other ideas here. It would be good to have a long list of themes or ideas to discuss when we meet up. In the next day or two I will post up a suggested date/time for this initial informal gathering, but don't worry if you can't make it. We'll have more, and we'll post up the key points for everyone else here.

In the meantime, it's worth mentioning that Jonathan Rollason (RSA Trustee) and I have been corresponding about manufacturing initiatives and are meeting at 4pm today to discuss ideas.

Will keep you posted on that...

Great, thanks Will and Jonathan. I'll suggest some dates later this month (?) for the get-together

Jonathan - in terms of contact

Last week I put out an initial call among my colleagues in the Fellowship team to gauge initially what's happening in regional or thematic Fellows' networks around manufacturing. Apart from the London Region and a couple of very early discussions in one or two other regions/networks (e.g. Brighton & Hove), it looks pretty sparse so far. Certainly there doesn't appear to be anything that is a funded, live initiative. I know from speaking to Dapo that London is involved in trying to decide what such an initiative might be, and has talked to the Institute for Manufacturing. But they are the most advanced on this track as far as I can see.

There have been some successful manufacturing-related catalyst bids,  various lectures and events at the house on the subject, one or two project publications etc. And the next Journal is going to focus on it as its primary theme.

But of course there are bound to be Fellows' initiatives that we aren't aware of, so do you have any other ways of finding out what's out there?

Julian,

An informal idea session sounds like a good idea. Count me in.

Will.

Julian, the RSA London Region has taken a leadership role in this, but I am sure there are many others who are doing the same, and who are perhaps well ahead of us.

Could you give us feedback on any direct communications you've had on this as I'd be keen to contact and connect up.

Hi all

Apologies for the long absence. Over the summer I've adopted a new role which is to revive the strand of RSA work around enterprise, innovation, industry and commerce. I'm visiting this group because as part of that I'm trying to identify how the RSA could make a useful contribution in the primary (resource) and secondary (manufacturing) sectors.

I'm currently trying to pull all of the RSA's historical work on this together into one place, and look ahead to future opportunities. Funnily enough Will, one of those opportunities I thought of is to revive Premiums in exactly the way you describe. So it's great to see you, Jonathan and I'm sure many others feel the same way.

So my questions are

Is anyone currently running Fellow-led work in this area, apart from the London Region led initiative which I know about?

Who is interested in coming to an informal idea session (perhaps a breakfast gathering one morning in the Gerard Bar) in how we can really revive this RSA tradition and cultivate/support this Group?

You can always email or ring me to discuss

"Manufactures" seems to have gone the same way as "commerce", clearly not trendy enough ;-)

So, what can we do to change this? Perhaps we could revive premiums/prizes as a way of encouraging innovative ideas in these areas?

Hello Jonathan

I would really like to  to see this part of the RSA emphasised more. There are so many  exciting  things  being  developed and designed.  I spoke to someone at  a Social  Entrepreneurs meeting last week  - he was a  designer  but got fed  up  designing more  'see saws  for  hee haws'   or something like this .Basically  expensive, pretty  stuff  people do not need   - but like.

I believe there is  block  getting British  ingenuity  into the market place - maybe

some   recent research has been  done  on this.  It is cool to  have new  products.and systems  that make  life  better  here and abroad.

The nack is to do things  better with  fewer  resources

What, I am wondering is the role of primary and secondary industry (is that what it is called, the extraction and manufacturing industries anyway) in the RSA.

Do they actually have anywhere to express themselves except for here (not being critical, I don't know if they are meeting in big warehouses and we're just not hearing from them)...

(incidentally, I think that Matt is right in what he says, but I think it DOES include banging bits of iron together too)

So then - what's the answer?

What can we do to get a re-emergence of this activity in the RSA?
