Comment by Charles Miller-Fik on December 15, 2012 at 22:42 Hello I'm an RMN - working in education (FE & HE) the prevelance of mental distress in our young people is a major concern - but often ignored - fortunately the college I work in has recognised it as something that requires support.

Comment by Jonathan Jewell on April 24, 2011 at 13:45 oh, sorry, to declare my interests here - I am a trustee of WPF Therapy, and was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder for 10 years. That diagnosis was updated last year, as being a mixed personality disorder. I'm a paediatric nurse by background and I have done a lot of work with Relate. Both WPF Therapy and Relate have initiated some really interesting stuff around mental health in the workplace.
I'd be really keen to help kickstart this - I'll pm you my mobile phone number, perhaps we could have a chat?

Comment by Andy Gibson on April 23, 2011 at 11:40 Thanks Michelle. I started a discussion about mental health and the cutshere if people want to discuss this in more detail too.
As I said in more detail over here, talking about how we all need to be happier leads directly to articles like Madeleine Bunting's piece on the Action for Happiness launch last week. I think policymakers, campaigners and healthcare workers are much safer sticking to the firm ground of physical and mental regulation and wellness, rather than talking about how we should feel. The comments on that Guardian piece are particularly scathing.
I think the underlying aim of all this "happiness" campaigning is intended to be about looking after vulnerable people, about tackling the madness of a society in which carers struggle to pay the rent whilst bankers are buying a new house every year. Somehow, unintentionally, Action for Happiness have ended up on the wrong side of that line, which is a shame for everyone really.

Comment by Andy Gibson on April 9, 2011 at 20:02 Hi Jonathan - and a general "hello" to everyone out there in digital-land. This group has been *ahem* a bit quiet lately. Largely because I haven't had the time to put into energising it. I would rather like to know if there's an appetite for it though, it would be good to reinvigorate it as there's so much going on in this area now at a national and a local level.
Jonathan, I think there is a general question around what people mean when they say "Mental health", it tends to often be a rather medical and biological definition and implies illness. I suspect that in the current spending climate, emotional distress, personality issues and low-level stress and depression are only really considered in the context of the other problems they create - worklessness, family problems, crime, workplace issues etc. Is there anyone who is responsible for tackling the whole overarching/underlying problem?
Over the next few months the RSAde Group will be consolidating regional social networks and nings.
The aim will be to improve connectivity for Fellows, improve communication and reduce fragmentation.
If you would like further information on these changes please contact the RSAde team via the Digital Engagement group on this network.
