Hello again At Large Councillors  - how's things?

if you are interested in regional communications to support the new development plans and teams, you might like to join this exploration I've started on an open doc http://bit.ly/YEavY3

Although it has a regional focus, I hope it might provide a route back into some of the more general issues that we discussed during the election.

Comment by Jemima Gibbons on August 14, 2012 at 12:18

Just to let everyone know, I've started a new topic in the general forum about the London online hustings pilot - which includes a link to the full RSAde report, covering issues raised by this 'At large' candidates group. If anyone wishes to comment, it would be great if you could do so on the general forum.

I've posted a further update on the Linkedin discussion across in RSA de, asking if Fellowship councillors are able to take a lead.

Thanks to Ed Whiting for confirming interest. Anyone else? Please pitch in to the Linkedin discussion which you will find linked from the above update ... or just at "Why did you join RSA" in the RSA group.

I hope this is something to interest our newly-elected, digitally-engaged, councillors! Will anyone take a lead?

I've just posted an update on my ideas for an exploration of a networked RSA, drawing on this discussion, over herehttp://bit.ly/OkkgTP

The conclusions I draw are:
* We first need some ground-clearing work to update the questions and answers about Fellowship, and resources available, and work under way. One thing everyone agrees on is that they are confused. Several people in the Linkedin group offered to work on that.

* We then need a strategy for network building and content management to complement the Technology Strategy. This involves facilitation, curating and reporting. It might be achieved by a combination or staff and volunteer Fellow activity, if it could be connected with people's interests and enthusiasms.

* The network building and content strategy need to encompass regional networks, interest networks, as well as project initiation and development.

* A lot could be done by facilitating discussion on Linkedin, with email newsletters and related content on Facebook and Twitter. Additional tools could be added as needed, where possible using those Fellows already use.

I've added:
We might now interest the newly-elected At Large councillors in joining in, and perhaps taking a lead, so that we are plugged in to official RSA development. Ed Whiting has blogged about The RSA - awakening the sleeping Fellowship giant, so I am hopeful.http://bit.ly/LvmluU

In addition, I believe that there are a lot of Fellows who are interested more generally in how to build networks and develop collaborations in and across organisations, and localities. We could set up an officially recognised special interest group like those here.
http://www.thersa.org/fellowship/fellows-networks
That could both look at general theory and practice - and also how it can apply to RSA.

Thankyou to all those who voted for me. I have very much enjoyed participating in the discussions and commenting. Thanks Jemima for setting up this space, and thanks also to David for his role in stimulating discussion.

David thank you you have been a great help and support.

I also really want to say a huge 'thank you' to everyone for their votes. I look forward to taking forward the issues raised here - and would really welcome any further thoughts from Fellows about issues that the council should be considering.

Thank you again and congratulations to the other 'At Large' and Regional Fellows.

I look forward to working with you all to the benefit of members.

Big congratulations to our newly elected At Large and regional councillors. Results here

http://www.thersa.org/about-us/governance

There is *very* lively discussion on Linkedin under the topic Why did you join the RSA, where I have just posted. I do hope you will join us. I wrote there:

The membership offer, or more properly Fellowship expectation, seems bounded by:
* charitable status and charity law: not just in terms of objects as in the Charter, but also in relation to byelaw 13.14 and Fellows' activities that may be seen as self-serving.

* the status or otherwise of "FRSA" (which matters to some people for the letters, and anyway should be some embodiment of shared values)

* the way our subscription is used: if it is gift aid, how does that constrain how it is spent ... and how in practice is it spent

* how Fellows may self-organise into project teams, and networks, and how far those activities are constrained by the above (e.g. how businessy may they be)

* just how internal communication systems are being designed within this framework, to support whatever activities Fellows may legitimately engage in. Put simply, what's happening this time around?

There may be areas for disagreement and argument about strategy. However - could we at least summarise what the questions/challenges are (as raised by you and others) and see how easily they may be answered, or require further investigation.

Matthew - is that too much of a hot potato for your FAQ and resources exercise? If so, would one of the Trustees be prepared to lead, or maybe one or more of the newly-elected At Large councillors - results of elections here http://www.thersa.org/about-us/governance

Unless we can get some clarity on these foundations, I don't see how we can created trusted spaces to move ideas and action forward collaboratively. We'll just keep having these frustrating conversations. I left last time around in 2010, rejoined this year, and really want to find a reason to renew next March ... and encourage others to do the same.
Who will take a lead .. trustees or council members? I don't think only-Fellows can sort it themselves.

Comment by John Elliott on July 12, 2012 at 11:31
Yes I agree with Ed and Pam. We do need as a Fellowship to become action oriented. But there is an awful lot of action, constructed in haste without much reflection about the problems it is aimed at addressing, that is a waste of time, effort and resources when it comes to effecting long-term, sustainable change. So we need to foster a more deliberative process of action research, in which we progressively, deepen our understanding of the situation itself as we reflect together about the actions we take to improve it. And we can only do that if we systematically gather evidence about the impact of the actions on other participants in the situation.

I agree with Ed and Pam.

Pam, thanks for your post- I'm in your camp!

There's so much we need to get on and do to help and support the fellowship to become 'do'-ers. Depending on how the elections turn out, I'd expect the fellowship council to get the wheels turning ASAP over the summer, and it'd be great to have your help!
