RSA Fellowship Social Network

Social Network for RSA Fellows

I really enjoyed yesterday’s session and I was pleased to see such strong recognition of the potential role of the arts in unlocking social capital. I wondered if any of the network could share examples of how this works in their communities?

My interest is two-fold: firstly at ‘art + power’ we are adopting a similar network approach that centres around the creative talents of disabled (and socially excluded) people - and I’d be grateful for any advice, support or guidance the network can offer - and secondly, I’ve just established ‘Arts in Development’ to share what I’ve learned at art + power and find out more about how best to realise the potential of arts to inspire change.

I’d like to learn more about creative approaches to social problems and particularly about successful examples of co-production that recognise (and ideally pay for!) the value of ‘experts by experience.’

I'm currently conducting a study investigating how health and social workers can help people with mental health problems enhance their social networks and access to social capital. One of the projects I'm working with is blueSCI in Trafford (http://www.bluesci.org.uk/index.asp). They are doing some really interesting work using the arts to promote social inclusion and seem to be doing some work akin to yours. Our study is investigating how they do what they do (alongside other projects in the statutory, voluntary and third sector) - more details attached if you're interested. blueSCI are well worth checking out.

David - glad you enjoyed it - you might have a look at this website from another project who attended (although you might already know them) - http://www.bowarts.org/home.php
Thank you both, that's exactly the sort of response I was hoping for and I'll follow these links up. The research looks fascinating, Martin. I'd be interested to see if any advantages/disadvantages emerge from the arts projects as opposed to the other settings.
No probs - also the RSA has a programme in Peterborough looking at Arts and social change - http://www.thersa.org/projects/citizen-power/arts-and-social-change2 for more details
Thanks Thomas, that is really helpful and very encouraging. I'm delighted to see this approach being adopted, I shall follow it with great interest!
David, you might be interested in the work of the Social Inclusion Network which promotes social justice and the creation of social capital in libraries, museums and galleries.

Thanks Karen, this sounds interesting - where can I find out more?

David,

Apologies for not replying earlier. The website is www.seapn.org.uk or you could e-mail John Vincent, the director, at john@nadder.org.uk.

Good luck!
