WSG OCCASIONAL PAPER 16

The Development of Museums in Victorian Britain and the Contribution of the Society of Arts by Anthony Burton (2010) includes an appendix of ‘Lit-and-Phil Museums up to 1869’ -£5.00

In this paper Anthony Burton discusses the growth of museums in the 19th century.  He considers the learned societies set up by local cultivated classes (often called Literary and Philosophical Societies – ‘Lit-and-Phils’ for short), many of which established museums.  He also considers the introduction of progressive legislation in many fields, including the allocation of public money to museums.

The contribution of the Society of Arts as a propagandist for museums through its campaigns in the late 1860s and 1870s is considered in the third part of this paper.

An appendix of ‘Lit-and-Phil’ museums up to 1869 and their current status has also been provided.
