Comment by Martin Newman on July 30, 2012 at 7:34 Don't know when I'll be returning there Susan but I will look for the plaque when I do its a shame I didn't know about it before I left for this trip. I do have a good pic of the Britannia Hut from a visit in 2010 I can send you if you'd like. Its not exactly a 'hut' as its 3 stories high and sleeps over 100.
Martin I'm sure that there are figures from mountaineering history who were members of the Society. You could check names against the list of members published with the RSA Journal (I hope that I will eventually find some funding to compile a database of members/Fellows which would make these sort of queries easy to answer). However I can tell you that D.S. Richards gave a paper on wireless communications with the Mount Everest expedition in 1933. Do let me know if you get a pic of the plaque.

Comment by Martin Newman on July 29, 2012 at 16:08 Thanks for the info about Clinton Thomas Dent. I was staying in the Britannia Hut with 2 friends last week before climbing the Strallhorn and we were wondering what the connection to Britain was. If I'd known I'd have looked for the plaque and got a picture. I'm sure I'll go back there as I haven't yet climbed the Riimpfischorn. Do you know if there were any other famous figures from the history of mountaineering who were Fellows of the RSA?
The designer of the innovative Olympic cauldron is a member of the RSA's Faculty of Royal Designers. Thomas Heatherwick was elected RDI in 2004
Over the next few months the RSAde Group will be consolidating regional social networks and nings.
The aim will be to improve connectivity for Fellows, improve communication and reduce fragmentation.
If you would like further information on these changes please contact the RSAde team via the Digital Engagement group on this network.
