Information

Linking With Youth

This is a group to discuss and make progress on the proposal for a fellowship-led youth linking initiative.

Mobilising the FRSA to link, in a structured way, with young people in order to provide information, advice, guidance and support.

The broad outline is to build a network of young people, and tap into existing networks, creating an active link, both live and online, between young people and the FRSA.

The motivation and focus for bringing these groups together is to:

1). develop a structured and networked approach for the FRSA to provide ongoing information, advice, guidance and support to young people throughout the country (and vice versa)

2). provide the means for young people to support each other, develop networks and partnerships, and to generate ideas, innovation, enterprise and social action

3). create the opportunity for the sharing of social capital

Thanks Matt. For those interested in the Nominet Trust link, here's where you can follow our exploration of how digital technologies can support young people to engage socially and economically with their communities.

The steering group had a very productive meeting last week and have made a plan of action. I will upload the meeting notes here, but in short we aim to:

  • Create a concept piece
  • Appoint young steering group members
  • Generate wider publicity
  • Engage with a wide population of fellows
  • Agree partnerships with a number of youth organisation (to be decided upon)
  • Meet and discuss with Nominet Trust
  • Apply for Catalyst funding
  • Facilitate inaugural event bringing together young people and RSA fellows around a shared interest in entrepreneurship (possibly 2 events)
  • Evaluate and report on the event
  • Complete a full project proposal
  • Seek further funding to move to a pilot and develop online functionality

We also have a working name of 'RSA Fellows Youth Network'. Not very catchy I know, but it will do for now. If anyone has any other suggestions please do add them here or on the discussion board.

I'll be at the digital technologies and youth engagement Nominet morning on the 12th. I believe that there may be potential here with the youth linking project, as much of the networking, IAG and capital sharing elements will be created online to ensure maximum reach and impact.

It would be good if others within this Youth Linking group could be there as well.

We have a few spare spaces at the meeting at RSA on the morning of April 12 with the Nominet Trust. As I posted earlier the Trust will shortly launch a funding challenge programme, on how young people can use digital technologies to find new opportunities. I'm working with Tim Davies to develop some provocative talking points to start crowdsourcing ideas. More in this blog post

Do let me know if you are interested david@socialreporter.com and I'll send you more about the event.

I'm looking to connect with people who are interested in how young people can use digital technologies to find new opportunities ... as part of an exciting project with the Nominet Trust. The Trust will shortly launch a funding challenge programme, and with Tim Davies I'm developing some provocative talking points to start crowdsourcing ideas. More here about the programme, and how I got involved. As part of the programme there will be an event at RSA - please get in touch if you are interested.

Hi,  thank you for everyone that has already volunteered to support this initiative.

For clarity, the members of the steering group have already been determined, although I'm sure they're will be plenty of opportunities for others to join at various points, either permanently or temporarily, as different areas of expertise are required.

Our first meeting will be taking place in April, determining strategy to raise the profile of the initiative and to move us towards a first event.  I have no doubt that part of that process will be to fully engage with young people, but I am of the opinion that we should agree and ensure some viability first off.

So is the aim to bring along young people to have their input at this stage? I think it's a great idea but do we have the capacity for this? It can't be a case of simply bring along a young person, it would open new set of considerations. Not a impossible set of consideratiosn but something we would need to think about.

Ignite! has hosted one such networking meeting that included Ignite! Creative Sparks, If Not You Who Else?, Protege and Spark and Mettle.

Happy to join a meeting in April to discuss this and bring reflections of our own meeting

I'll be with you, but only if a young person agrees to accompany me...what is the age-range, or shall I ask my young person?

Comment by Matt Lent on March 14, 2012 at 15:13

We are currently organising a steering group meeting to take place in April, the aim of which will be to make progress towards creating a concept piece, widening publicity of the project throughout the FRSA, the securing of Catalyst funding, and planning an initial event to bring together some FRSA and young people, as well as discussing wider implications and ideas, many of which have been expressed here.

The more people and networks that are on board with the concept from the early stages the more likelihood that the initiative will be successful and sustainable. So if you know of anyone, FRSA or not, that would be interested in supporting, contributing or even linking their networks, then please do direct them towards this group, or directly to me if they have any specific queries (matt@treetoptraining.co.uk).
