Fair trading in our global world at Common Grounds Cafe

March 13, 2012 from 5:30pm to 7pm
This is an opportunity to participate in conversation about 'fair trading’ in today's interconnected global society. Please come along and contribute to a socially-important exploration of questions about the nature and importance of fair trade.  What is the place of fair trade in today’s world? Why should we show supportive interest? And how can we do so?Ruth Taylor, Supporter Relations Officer with the…See More

Creating capability for young adult leaders in Northern Ireland

I've scribbled a few words about a positive experience of 'bettering society' through voluntary efforts, based on an enjoyable experience in the Share Centre, Co Fermanagh yesterday. It's not directly related to the 'big society' theme but may have some relevance. Things are going to get lighter ..

Today is the shortest day of 2011. With that in mind - and the imminence of pervasive Christmas frivolities and feasting - here are some of my mid-winter reflections.  I leave it to you to reflect on possible relevance to the RSA's work in thought leadership linked to social innovation ...

Our contemporary world, with all its measurist preoccupation with 'the mechanical', continues to need poetry.  How wise may the people of the Irish Republic turn…

On succeeding well - and how to celebrate it in Northern Ireland

Yesterday evening I returned home from holiday to be greeted by mixed news in the local media of current happenings, both happy and horrific. And, not for the first time, there are causes for both gladness and sadness about being from 'our wee country' - a place that expresses, with more or less ease, a unique political/cultural mix of Irishness and Britishness.

The front page of the Belfast Telegraph, 'Northern Ireland's Daily Newspaper' [though not the only one!] celebrated…

Pragmatic vision needed in Northern Ireland education

TheFriday 18th March issue of the Belfast Telegraph carried articles and comment pieces assessing the performance of the Northern Ireland Assembly's Education Minister as the May elections loom. And it's not a high grade that Caitriona Ruane has achieved!  'It's top marks for smugness, but she fails on realism' is one commentator's summative assessment.  Certainly, it's clear enough to those of us who have lived, and often cringed, through the last 4 years that the outgoing…
