The democratization of organisations

The other week, I was at a meeting of a century old institution. The incoming President presented the results of a review that he’d been engaged in, that had impacts on the organisational structure, especially that affecting a number of volunteers. The existing structure has been in place for some time, and the people involved have their own interpretations of what its significance is – depending on how they came to be there. Some of these people were elected into position and, regardless of…See More

Profile Information

Yes
Profile information
I get an enormous kick out of seeing people achieve things that they never dreamt they could do.

An ethologist and psychotherapist, I spent the first half of my career helping to create workplaces where the leaders saw their role as nurturers of future leaders, and where the staff were genuinely empowered to make decisions and take action that could enhance their customer's experience of the organisation.

Together we did some pretty amazing things; I wrote several books, and was very fortunate to be awarded a Churchill Fellowship allowing me to study similar initiatives in India, Japan and the United States (USA).

I began to focus on leadership development as I saw this group as the major catalyst (and, of course, potential obstacles) in this kind of 'excellence' culture. For the last 15yrs, I have worked behind the scenes with leaders from all kinds of organisations and around the world, as a confidant (www.the-confidant.info) - helping them understand company psychodynamics, situations, politics, and their own and other people's behaviour - managing their own careers - and, when appropriate, supporting them in their search for new jobs (www.executive-post.info).

The focus, throughout, is on a better understanding of their own beliefs and values and the creation of places to work that are sustainable, nurturing of individuals, and that excel in serving all stakeholders.

Along the way, I also qualified as an inter-faith minister - 'never instead of, always in addition to', we work with no fixed creed or prescriptive set of beliefs, supporting those individuals who do not fit into established Faiths, or are excluded from them, and yet have a sense of the spiritual (through a sense of connectedness with nature and love for others).

Chair of three charities - The South Central Ambulance Service League of Friends, All Hallows House Foundation, and the Surrey Branch of the Royal Life Saving Society.

Job hunting - the single most effective thing to do

For over a decade, I have been helping senior executives to find a new job. A couple of years ago, I wrote a short book to help them in the process - it's called the "Senior Executive's Emergency Job Hunt" and I'll explain where you can get a copy at the end of this article. People come to me for all sorts of reasons, but often it is because they have been unable to find a new role for two or three months and are beginning to get a little desperate. Everyone is different, and I can't make…

What exactly is an entrepreneur?

I've been doing a lot of work around the nature of entrepreneurism lately, and thought it might be a worthwhile topic to explore with a wider group of people too.

Mention the term 'entrepreneur' to the public and you'll get very different definitions. Probably because of programmes like the Dragon's Den, many people actually confuse the individual with an idea with the investor providing the money to make it happen. Most will also assume that the term was an invention of the…

Thanks Graham - looking forward to meeting. From your profile and blog post,  I'm hoping you'll have some ideas on how to interlink the three circles of people's personal motivations, commitment to the RSA, and wider social benefit. I'll have more on OpenRSA.

Review of RSA Fellowship nings, social networks

Over the next few months the RSAde Group will be consolidating regional social networks and nings.

The aim will be to improve connectivity for Fellows, improve communication and reduce fragmentation.

If you would like further information on these changes please contact the RSAde team via the Digital Engagement group on this network.

The Power of Vulnerability

Influential author and speaker Dr Brené Brown tackles the myth that vulnerability is a weakness. Instead, she argues, it is the clearest path to courage and meaningful connection, and has the power to transform the way we engage and educate.

Leading Change
