"Before we can answer any of these questions we need to consider what education is for. Are we talking about outstanding schools that are getting more students into HE, or an education that feeds the whole child and community, or one that instills a…"

I am the co-founder and chief operating officer of educational charity The Philosophy Foundation. I graduated from Rose Bruford College with an acting degree in 1997. I have worked in the acting industry since then, and have worked in various other industries (Marketing, Human Resources, Banking, Sales, Education) due to the nature of acting! In 2007 I set up The Philosophy Shop, a Community Interest Company, with Peter Worley. The company was formed to bring philosophy to schools and the wider community. It has grown quickly and we now have a team of 24 accredited philosophy teachers working throughout the UK. The company reformed into a charity in 2010 and is now called The Philosophy Foundation. The Philosophy Foundation is the only charity in the world that trains philosophy graduates to do philosophy in schools in order to develop children's autonomous learning, higher-order thinking skills, divergent and convergent thinking. Philosophy develops the art of learning to learn and encourages more thoughtful and reflective children enabling them to participate in society more independently.
Through doing philosophy in the classroom our primary concern is to improve educational opportunities for the disadvantaged: our work develops speaking and listening skills vital for literacy and emotional development, helps children who find it difficult to access other classes, and encourages critical and creative thinking essential in the 21st Century.
In the 10 years before setting up The Philosophy Shop I was a successful actor and occasional stand-up. I write my own own comedy material and continue to work when I have the opportunity, and time. I have worked as an drama educator for schools and regularly work with children’s charity Scene and Heard as both an actor and dramaturg.
