Lost in France

Although Geof Cox Associates will continue to be based in the UK I have moved my home to France. It's nothing to do with France's socialist government!  My partner Pauline will be running the 'Hirondelles' Gites of Brittany business - eventually as a social  enterprise - it's on the new Velodyssey Atlantic Cycling Route which runs for over a thousand kilometres from the UK to…See More

An ethical investment parable

Two keen bargain hunters go out to get some good deals. Shopper A decides to only look in John Lewis.  Shopper B is less particular: he'll look in Lewis', of course – also anywhere else he might get some better deals.  When they get home their partners want to know how well they've done.  Of course they assume Shopper B must have done better – since he looked at the best deals in Lewis' and everywhere else, wheras Shopper A only looked in Lewis'.  Surely the result is a foregone…See More

Social Enterprise & Open Source Culture

I wonder if any Fellows share a concern I will be exploring at this year's Future of Everything Conference, 12th-13th May in Manchester: the uncritical adoption by social enterprise of conventional business approaches to intellectual property rights and other business and finance tools.I want to explore the way emergent online ‘peer production’ and ‘collaborative consumption’ business models – and especially those arising…See More

A political divide in social enterprise

I'm fresh from the Guardian Social Enterprise Conference where I was leading the 'clinic' on different forms of social enterprise and legal structures.   Although tied up there most of the day I was amused in the opening plenary to hear one speaker contrast social enterprises and charities - and literally a minute later the next speaker opening with the words 'we are a social enterprise and a charity'.  I've already shared my thoughts on this recently on the…See More

Jeff Mowatt replied to Geof Cox's discussion 'Tax Concessions for Social Enterprise?' in the group Social Entrepreneurs Network
