John Thurlbeck is the Managing Director of Wear Consulting Limited, which is an independent organisational and workforce development consultancy he set up in September 2003. John has a real passion for work with and for young people; a strong sense of social justice; and, a real belief in the ability of youth work to deliver lasting outcomes for young people. Prior to setting up his own business, John worked as a youth work practitioner and manager in the local government youth work sector from qualifying as a youth and community worker in 1978; finishing his career as Head of Youth, Community Development, Adult Education and Play from 1996 – 2003 in his home city of Sunderland.
John has practiced and managed youth work in large shire counties, metropolitan boroughs and large city unitary authorities. During his career he has practiced most forms of youth work delivery and has largely engaged in what is best described as ‘turnaround management’ – taking on failing provision and putting it right. He has an abiding commitment to engagement, empowerment, lifelong learning, equality of opportunity and working in collaboration with partners and believes passionately that youth work can make a major contribution to the modern social policy arena.
John is a lead associate for the 13 – 19 agenda for FPM, a prominent leadership and management training company based in Leicester and is currently active, through FPM, on a DfE pilot programme known as Young People Friendly Neighbourhoods.
Since 2003, John has provided a range of services to local authority and third sector youth services and organisations, as well as Connexions Services and private sector bodies. He has also worked regularly for regional youth work units and government agencies, providing a spectrum of training, review, coaching, mentoring, research and interim management functions.
