Hilda Varley has suggested that the Manufacturing Group would suit my interests,  I run a consultancy in Materials Science and Engineering working for virtually all industry types, aerispace, marine, defence, oil, petrochem and many small designers and manufacturers solving technical problems and investigating failures. I am also writing a novel which has as it background political reform. ...encouraging a healthy approach to risk taking what a novel idea.....why just today, i had a conversation with a friend explaining, showing my prototypes and my plan to also paint promote and show my own art in my own cooperative booth for a fraction of what it would usually cost if i went a more traditional route.  You can only imagine the negativity that i heard spewing out of his mouth.   

 

So jonathan....this was perfect timing to hear the phrase "the glory of failure".  and your invitation.

My narrow and limited experience - sharply focussed during years of participation at international level sport, seemed to highlight the generalisation of American 'can-do' and the British resigned 'it's the taking part' attitudes to performance, success and failure.
Heroic failure has always seemed to attract less resentment in Britain than overt and unqualified success. But perhaps this is just a slightly more marked and (UK) commented upon human trait or reflection even, of my own response reflex.
'Failure', of course, is a concept that spinning politicians make a lifetime of applying to others parties and going to great lengths to demonstrate its absence from their own.
Even the 100m sprinters will interpret their own race performances from a bewildering array of different angles and strategies applicable to winners and losers alike.
I shall follow the discussion with interest.
In regard of the 'Friends of Friendless Churches' - I shall look them up.
