Acuity is the mother of invention, isn't it?

Supposedly innovation will be the saviour of us all - bringing much needed solutions to hard economic social and environmental problems. If we can just use our human creativity, ingenuity, agency in the right way, then everything will be OK, and the promise of Progress will be delivered. Right now though we appear to be piling ahead in some areas, and floundering in way too many others. So how can we be more effective overall? There is much debate as to the actual nature of innovation, and how…See More

Securing the future

Speaking at the RSA , author Mischa Gleeny highlighted key arguments and examples from his book 'Dark Market: Cyber thieves, cyber cops and you'. Highly entertaining and sobering - it's not often that the personalities and faces behind cybercrime are shown as human, not just money grabbing monsters. The sheer scale and audacity of cyber crime, cyber warfare, and cyber industrial espionage has exploded over the past decades - and identifying and prosectuing the perpetrators is becoming harder and…See More

The war to end all wars

Recent research has been focusing on the possibility that personality, states of mind and health can be affected by the experiences of previous generations – in a way that does not rely on the currently known methods of DNA transmission, but instead uses a methylation process to pass on responses to extremes of stress. As a recent New Scientist article puts it – the sins of…See More

RSA fellow and part-time Central St Martins’ MA student (MA Applied Imagination in the Creative Industries).

Current research statement:

"Everyone expects design to address world problems - but it’s not happening fast enough, and with enough impact. Our focus on coming up with new ideas to meet current needs is laudable, but may also be covering a deeper issue that could throw us for six in the future.

Right now, we’re still benefiting from generations of good design education, pioneering spirit, plus the momentum of new technologies and processes. Is this combination a finite resource? Are we in PEAK DESIGN?

The Horsemeat scandal is also telling: outsourcing is the design industries dirty little secret. Are designers are becoming ragged trousered philanthropists, working themselves to the limit for little reward, ongoing training and limited career progression?

If, so what action can we take NOW to ensure that life is better for those working in design today, and that there will be a good supply of great designers for the future? "

Lucy has a background in design, digital production and content strategy, performance, activism, and the making of couture jewellery . She is now a Content Manager at Business in the Community.
