Paul Nash commented on Viv Long-Ferguson's group 'Digital Engagement'
"Sorry to be a bit late to the gate with this one people but have been closeted in rural France for the last week and didn't really want to get back into the real world - I'm sure you understand. Of course, rural France may well be the real…"

John Oakley commented on Paul Nash's blog post 'Digital By Default - Have we thought about this?'
"Well Graham Wilson was saying recently that the primary role of government is to provide jobs not to run efficient organizations. As a long-time digital officiando as I come to the end of my ... career - lets leave it at that - I keep asking myself…"

Paul Nash commented on Paul Nash's blog post 'Digital By Default - Have we thought about this?'
"Thank you for the comment John and it's quite timely. The UK Government has just appointed a new Digital Advisory Board with Martha Lane-Fox as the Chair. You can see the membership here; while they may all be good men (and women) true, just…"

John Oakley commented on Paul Nash's blog post 'Digital By Default - Have we thought about this?'
"I have a very similar background to you and have exactly the same issues with "digital gateways". It has now reached the point where when I need to interact with any organization I use the phone and then repeatedly press 0 until I get a…"

Paul Nash replied to Jemima Gibbons's discussion 'Technology Strategy Programme Board - first meeting' in the group Digital Engagement
"Hi John.   I'm pleased we have some agreement on this and I concur with your analysis of setting and engagement. On 24th I will be somewhere between Northern France and Northern Shropshire so will miss the opportunity to meet, a shame I…"

Paul Nash replied to Jemima Gibbons's discussion 'Technology Strategy Programme Board - first meeting' in the group Digital Engagement
"Jemima,   You're welcome. Do you mean the Fellowship Council elections? It looks good *but* I think I'm too new and wouldn't get the necessary nominations which is fair enough. Maybe when I've done something useful…"

Paul Nash replied to Jemima Gibbons's discussion 'Technology Strategy Programme Board - first meeting' in the group Digital Engagement
"Hi Jemima I think it's not so much about products; as I said Huddle and Basecamp are excellent products, it's about clarity of where we want to be and awareness of how the world is changing so that when we get there we're not looking…"

Paul Nash replied to Jemima Gibbons's discussion 'Technology Strategy Programme Board - first meeting' in the group Digital Engagement
"Jemima Many thanks for this feedback, it's most useful. It's reassuring to know that there is a process underway though, coming from a public sector background, such processes can become their own barrier to progress. I must echo…"

Digital Inclusion in Indian Slums - there are lessons to be learned.

Whether you believe in serendipity or deny its existence citing its impact can be an attention getter. One of the attractions of Twitter for me is the way in which those serendipitous moments aggregate in one place. It was thus when last week I came across an academic paper by two Microsoft© Researchers, Nimmi Rangaswarmy  and Edward…See More

Paul Nash replied to David Wilcox's discussion 'What digital champions and reporters might do to animate RSA networks' in the group Digital Engagement
"I think wwe're talking about two different but related things here. The aggregation of the diverse channels using Netvibes is acknowledged as a good first attempt I believe but it needs development. You have to start somewhere and this is…"

"Hi All I managed to get distracted yesterday and lost the flow somewhat.. I am somewhat heartened by Matthew's mishap ;-) and here I am thinking these things only happen to me. A question for us all: are we talking about platform or are we…"

Paul Nash replied to David Wilcox's discussion 'What digital champions and reporters might do to animate RSA networks' in the group Digital Engagement
"Off the top of my head (never a good idea) we could by way of experiment use something like paper.li just to see what we get and what it looks like. Though my own vision (not sure I should admit to having those ;-) ) would be to move towards more of…"

Paul Nash replied to David Wilcox's discussion 'What digital champions and reporters might do to animate RSA networks' in the group Digital Engagement
"Hi David,   Some useful, positive thinking here and I would certainly encourage people to examine this idea closely with a view to taking it forward. Count me in especially as I don't get down to London that often these days.   Some…"

Digital By Default - Have we thought about this?

I learned the other day that access to the new single benefit payment will be digital by default. I'm not sure whether some unthinking civil servant has had the idea that we can close the digital divide by enforcing dependency on digital channels, but let me tell you now, it won't work. There are two reasons for this and I can support this with real life examples. The first relates to a close relative of mine who finds himself homeless. He has a rare, genetic condition that became apparent late…See More

Digital Inclusion - Minority Report

The scene from Minority Report where Tom Cruise walks through the adverts but with somebody else’s retina scan has become iconic. Advertisers argue that they are only giving us those things in which we are interested hence Facebook knows what you like but Google knows what you want whereas Amazon knows what everybody like you had. We have to take stock of what we are bringing into the living room when smart TV’s arrive complete with apps and channels controlled by app providers not independent…See More

Profile Information

Are you an RSA Fellow?
Yes
Profile information
I am, in theory, retired after 35 years in public service but my project managment business keeps me busy and while it started as a means of keeping me occupied for some of the time it now employs two of us pretty much most of the time. We work with small businesses, public sector organisations, community groups and third sector sector organisations and we find that most of the time we provide support for project design.

My personal passion is for digital inclusion: I believe in its power to support democracy, to aid transparency, to engage, to co-produce, to crowd source, to entertain and inform. I would like ot think that digital technology can make a difference to the most disengaged people in our society either directly or indirectly.

I am a Member of the Association for Project Management and the Best Practice User Group. I am also an Associate at the Centre for Enterprise at Manchester Metropolitan University. I work as an associate for Citizens Online. I am a member of the CEMSDI panel of experts supporting the use of ICTs by public servants.

When time allows I participate in European networks for e Participation and e Literacy.

My hobby is photography and Hill Walking and I live, with my partner Val, in North Shropshire.

Rethinking Digital Inclusion

This has been cross posted from http://www.penval.co.uk/news/rethinking-digital-inclusion

Somebody once wrote, or maybe I heard it on the radio, that if you put all of the world’s top eye surgeons in a room and told them to come up with the perfect surgical tool not one of them would think of the laser. The principle has been highlighted this week by the circulation of a piece by the “Infinite…
