Campaign to support jailed Iranian artist

The European Council of Artists has drawn attention to the plight of Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr. Marzieh is an actress in her own country, Iran. She was sentenced to one year in jail and 90 lashes for playing in a feature film the role of an young actress living in Teheran whose show is banned by  authorities and who, in order to continue to express herself artistically, is condemned to live an underground existence. The  film clearly denounces the hurdles and humiliation that artists…See More

Engaging artists

Just signposting a debate elsewhere within RSAThe debate on cities at the RSA is first and foremost a verbal discourse. While it often engages the arts and design, Agnieszka Mlicka FRSA argues it excludes artists who express their views on the urban condition through a pictorial language. She suggests an alternative approach.…See More

A little about me

I'm the Director of Programmes at a-n The Artists Information Company www.a-n.co.uk . It's a non-profit arts business with a mission to stimulate and support contemporary visual arts practice and affirm artists’ value in society. Appointed in 1999. I've been active in moving tthis traditional book and magazine publishing company into the 21st Century, utlising imaginative applications of Web 2.0 technology to nurture and sustain its communities of interest and support cultural advocacy. I'm a visual arts researcher and expert contributor on artists’ livelihoods and professional development matters within UK and international peer networks including Paradox, Interartes, CreativePeople and N-Ten.

I've served on committees including Arts Council of Great Britain, Northern Arts, Visual Arts and Galleries Association and Northern Cultural Skills Partnership and have provided evidence to the CMS Select Committee Inquiry into the Market for Art (2006) and Arts Council reviews including on artists’ livelihoods (2002), Turning Point (2006) and RFO Peer Review (2009).

My involvement with the new RSA Fellowship Council is at an early stage and I am feeling my way into it. It's as an exciting challenge, I hope to extend my knowledge outside the arts world and be part of dialogues around broader society issues including sustainability, citizenship and well-being.
