RSA Elections: At Large candidate Professor John Elliott

[Please note: John is currently on holiday with limited access to the internet - he's asked me to post his candidate's statement here on his behalf, in case Fellows have missed it on the main RSA website and as a way of introducing John to the discussions taking place here on the RSA Fellowship Social Network]

How might new Fellows be better supported when they first join the RSA?

I'm a fairly new Fellow (please be gentle with me).

I want to take advantage of my newness before I forget what it feels like and suggest that there might be ways that new Fellows could be supported as part of the induction process. If the suggestions fall on fertile ground I'm happy to devote some time to helping that happen.

I was fortunate enough to attend an excellent New Fellows event a bit more than a week ago, which has coincided with me shifting from being a pretty…

Questions about the RSA upcoming elections?

Over the next few months there will be a number of opportunities for Fellows who would like to become more engaged on a voluntary basis in the way the RSA is run – and my colleague Brinda Sittapah, the RSA’s Governance Manager outlines what is happening and the opportunities available:

Q) What are the available posts? A) We’re looking for three…

What's in a Name? UK Football in the 21st Century

Sports Direct Arena?

I must admit to rather choking on my toast this morning as I saw the news of St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United FC, being renamed as the Sports Direct Arena. Commercial branding of stadia has become a recurring trend in recent years (e.g. The Emirates for Arsenal, Etihad for Man City and the Reebok for Bolton), however there has been a presumption that certain names were off limits. It was inconceivable that proud stadia such as Anfield, Old Trafford…

Events Dear Boy, Events...

Events, or specifically lectures, are probably the resource for which the RSA is best known. Whether it is the incredible collection of world leading speakers we have at John Adam Street; the innovative Animate series; or the range of events that take place outside London, as a Society we put together some incredible lectures.

This week I attended the RSA’s lecture at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, where the future of the city was discussed. The following day, I…

The Big Jump - Brief thoughts

I had the great pleasure in attending the Big Jump yesterday at the Sage, Gateshead.  Organised by Dr Jim TerKeurst FRSA, from the Institute of Digital Innovation at Teesside University, and his team this event explored the role of social enterprises within the Big Society context, and particularly in relation to the North East.  The event was supported by RSA Catalyst, and demonstrated the impact that the Catalyst Fund can make in promoting relevant, important events.

It was…

Trustee candidate Suzy Walton will be speaking on Woman's Hour on BBC 4 on Tuesday the 15th of February, on whether women are more risk averse than men. Suzy is standing in the current Trustee elections, on a shared platform with three other candidates; Don Pinchbeck, Ted Fowler and Wiard Sterk. If you have not yet made up your mind, this is a good opportunity to hear one of the candidates first hand before your vote.

The RSA’s “Tea Party” moment.

The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) is facing something of a “Tea Party” moment. There are two motions that have been put forward for the society’s 27,442 Fellows (members) to vote on at its AGM on 6th December 2010.The first motion is to form a governance advisory group and the second motion is for the society to move to a “democratically elected” Trustee board. The first motion has the support of the existing trustees (who are mostly appointed rather than elected)… Continue

Glory of Failure - our Wikipedia entry

The Glory of Failure campaign was originally an RSA Networks project created by Mitchell Sava in 2007.[1] It is now co-chaired by Jonathan Jewell.

RSA Networks is part of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA).

The goal of 'The Glory of Failure' is to change society's attitude to failure, encouraging a more healthy approach to risk taking and removing the taboo around failure.[1]

The idea behind the project came from observation of the… Continue
