Following on from the fantastic launch of the Social Renewal theme which we had with Newcastle University on Tuesday (more to follow shortly), I wanted to draw the attention of Fellows to the recently launched report by the 2020 Public Service Hub at the RSA. They have been conducting work analysing Sunderland's Community Leadership Programme for the impact that it has on the community, and the potential for learning lessons for other contexts.
There has been a lot of talk about the Big Society and its more recent retreat from public view, yet the Community Leadership Programme offers a powerful example of big society in action as a deliberate attempt to re-engage and reinvigorate a community. It has been a very practical approach, focussed on learning through doing rather than through pronouncing or dictating, and one rooted within the historical context of Sunderland as a city. As we look to develop new ways of delivering public services across the country, examples such as the Community Leadership Programme can offer guidance for other areas as they try to break down the silos which exist in current provision.
The report is available at http://2020psh.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/RSA1209_2020_Sunderla.... It is hoped that we will look to develop some activity building from it in the North East, so if you would be interested in finding out more please drop me a line.
