Fellowship Council Meeting 15th December 2010

The new Fellowship Council is meeting for the second time on the 15 December.

We (Bob Porrer and Tessy Britton) were asked to act as temporary Co-Chairs for this meeting, which aims to establish the FC’s mode of operation and also make a start on the more creative work of facilitating the development of projects and other activities.

The purpose of this meeting is to:

• Agree a strategy and structure.
• Elect Fellowship Council members for key roles.
• Decide on council operations.
• Generate ideas for using projects and group activity to engage and connect the Fellowship.
• Agree on specific activities.

In order to make most effective use of the meeting time we circulated a questionnaire to Fellowship Council members with the aim of teasing out key issues and ideas. The response was varied and interesting and has shown the wide potential scope of the Fellowship Council. Council members were also asked to choose three words they would like, over time, for the Fellowship to use to describe the Fellowship Council, and these have been made into the word visual above.

The strategy and structure will need to be considered carefully during the meeting. In particular, the Fellowship Council will need to ensure that efforts do not become fragmented, that there is sufficient infrastructure and skills to support proposed activity (both from RSA staff and from Fellows).... while working with Fellowship enthusiasms, skills, energy and time.

The list of possible responsibilities, issues and activities to be considered at the meeting is currently a long one. The Fellowship Council would also be very interested in feedback directly from Fellows before the meeting to inform this discussion further.

As a Fellow or RSA staff member, do you have an issue or an activity you consider a priority for the Fellowship Council to work on in 2010?

Hi Mike/Jo/David

The RSA has a new Head of Projects, Julian Thompson, who has kindly agreed to share some of his initial thoughts about Fellows and Projects at the Fellowship Council meeting. The RSA are very keen to pick up some of the early development on a flexible framework to look at different ways the RSA and Fellows can work together, as are many members of the Council. Added to which Matthew Taylor has indicated interest in the RSA developing a new fund to possibly provide seed funding to new ideas.

I suspect/hope that one of the things that will come out of the meeting on the 15th December is a working group made up of RSA staff, Fellowship Council members and Fellows who can collaboratively explore this complex issue in detail.

As I am not able to be at this second meeting, I am reading all the pre-papers in order to provide my comments to those who are on the issues and options raised. As this is a vital positioning and planning meeting, I am wondering if there are others like me who will miss the meeting who might form a 'cluster' - virtual or otherwise - for a designated update session so that we are not lagging behind.and can quickly get involved in the pace of progress.
