New Economic Models
In order to remain competitive in the, now globalised economy, the UK must seek to create innovative and successful businesses for the future.
New business models in a Digital Economy will create a more flexible, dynamic, resilient and individual centred economy for the UK. Some new economic and business models will only be possible due to specific new technologies or services. It is also important to consider what the Digital Economy means for existing businesses and business models. How can they best grasp the opportunities and adapt?
No matter what the enabling technology there are many other factors that must be considered to ensure that a new economic model is sustainable and beneficial to individuals and the UK, including: societal attitudes; ethics; technical challenges; law; and regulatory matters amongst many others.
Proposals submitted under this theme may take the form of new economic/business models or those that enable a current business or service to take advantage of opportunities in the digital economy.
The outputs from the proposed project should lead to new learning around economic models and may include models of social value as well as economic benefit.
Communities and Culture
Society at large is an interwoven connection of communities that together define a national culture from many sub-cultures. Communities, both physical and virtual, can be the glue that enables the country to address and deal with some of the big societal challenges facing us, such as global and national security, living sustainably and an ageing population.
There is a real potential for Communities and Culture to be transformed by the enabling power of digital infrastructure. Now, more than ever there is a democratic ability for all to contribute to creation of culture, but much of this output is ephemeral, and transient in nature. There is real opportunity to capture creativity, enable the individual and turn this into a creation of wealth; fiscal and/or cultural.
Proposals submitted under this theme will address the research challenges of using digital technologies to support communities and culture in order to make a real difference to peoples’ lives. This could be on an individual, local, national or global scale.
